Watchers of the Night

Eos at the Gates

As a child, living on an elevated rural tableland where the winters were cold and relatively dry, with clear night skies and low light pollution, perfect for star gazing. I’m not sure why it took me so long to think about photographing it. On my first foray into night photography I camped for a few days on the Gungarlin River, but I hadn't done any research as on galactic visibility (the galactic core was not visible for most of the night), or moon phase and times (a bright gibbous moon that only set around 3:30am). There was cloud for fair portions of the night, and occasional banks of fog rolling through. And it was absolutely marvelous! The moonlight on the clouds and fog was indescribably lovely, and something that I had never really observed before. Since then I have taken some more typical astro images, but the swirl of the clouds and fog accentuated by the slow shutter was a great example of fortuitous happenstance that I could only wish would happen more often.
